  2. Ruth liked living in New York for many reasons. One reason of why Ruth liked living in New York is that she was unhappy living in the south. On page 129 it says "Mameh saw how unhappy down down there and had started sending me up to New York practically every summer by Greyhound to stay with her family." Then next reason of why Ruth liked living in New York was everyone seemed to busy to care about their race and religion. On page 130 it says "I liked to visit them because New York was an eyepopper for me. Plus everyone seemed too busy to care about what race or religion you were. I loved it." Those are some reasons of why Ruth liked living in New York.

  3. Ruth always went to visit New York during the summer to see her mother’s sisters. She liked to visit New York for many reasons, one of them being that she thought that people really did not care about your religion or your race. This is stated on page 130 " ... I liked to visit them because New York was an eye popper for me. Plus everyone seemed too busy to care about what race or religion you were. I loved it". The reason that she enjoyed that was because she was ridiculed as a child for being a Jew so finally when people were not making fun of her was a good thing. Another reason why she enjoyed going to New York was she enjoyed the constant rush that was going on there. She always thought to herself where be all of these people going and what are they doing rushing around like that. This is stated on page 130 “I had never seen so many people rushing about I would say to myself, “Where the heck they gotta be, rushing like that?” But I wanted to rush like them, and got with the program as soon as I could. Sometimes I’d just go out and walk them so I could rush with the crowd. I had nowhere to go. Just going crazy, rushing with the rest!” She liked the rush and was interested by if because she had never seen anything like it before in their small, KKK filled town of the south. These are just two of the few reasons why Ruth liked New York.

  5. Ruth went to New York solely on the reason that she became pregnant with Peters baby. When her Mameh found out it says that she presented the bracelet to Ruth and suggested for her to go to New York for the summer never questioning why. When she arrived at New York she lived with her Aunts which had very little respect for her due to her mothers disabilities. On the other hand Ruth's grandmother and aunt Betsy took good care of her and were nice never making her feel bad. So true that is says that when Aunt Betsy found out that Ruth was pregnant she helped Ruth get a doctor who performed abortions. This is why Ruth like New York better than the life she had at home.

  6. Coming from the odd man out to a person that was barley notice in the streets was great for Ruth. I can tell that she was going to love it there because everybody went about there bussiness and there wasn't as much hate and despise for jew's over there. For example," plus everyone seemed to busy to care about what race or religon you were". Ruth also love the fast life about New York she live to see people always on the move. For example,"where the heck they gotta be rushing like that? but i wanted to rush like them, and got with the program as soon as i could".That's why ruth like New York so much.

Also she loved new york because everyone rused or was too because to care what race(blacks and whites) you are or religion(jew). Ruth liked the rushing so much she wanted to rush too. Quote: "Where the heck they gotta, be rushing like that"? But I wanted to rush like that too Ruth explained". Ruth lastly would just go out and walk to rush with a crowd. This made her feel crazy.

In chapter 23, Ruth tells us that she loves New York. On page #99, it quotes: "Mameh have five sisters and one brother in New York, plus her mother, and they all were living high." In this quote, Ruth's other side of the family was living in a very wealthy lifestyle, unlike the way she is living back home. And she would describe how classy it was when she went to visit there in the summer. There would be a maid to tend to their every nedd around the Aunt Laura's huge apartment. Also meals were served in courses too. This is a way Ruth wants to live her life back at home, to have money and not be miserable. This is one reason why Ruth loves New York.
Another example of Ruth loving New York is that her grandmother was living there as well. On page #101, it quotes: "The only one that really loved me was my grandmother, Bubeh. Bubeh loved me. ...a funny woman who spoke no English and was full of life." In this quote, Ruth fells loved by her grandmother, basically the only one in the entire family that showed Ruth was loved by someone. Bubeh was the only one who Ruth can express her love and affection too. This is why Ruth love to come to New York.

P.S. The page numbers that I have listed above were pages from a hardcover addition of the color of water. That is why the page numbers won't match to the page numbers in the paperback addition of the color of water.

Ruth liked New York because it really stood out to her and she felt like she could fit in and it was finally a place where race or religion wasn't important. For example, on page 130, it says, "I liked to visit them because New York was an eye popper for me." Also on page 130, "Plus everyone seemed too busy to care about what race or religion you were. I loved it." In conclusion, Ruth liked New York because it was an eyepopping place where she could finally fit in regardless of her looks or beliefs.

1.Ruth loved going to New York because she felt it was an, "Eye popper" for her. (According to Chpt. 13 pg 130) As a young girl she used to travel there to visit her rich aunts and uncles. Ruth felt as if her aunts didn't want to be bothered with their poor crippled sister's daughter. They called her family "greenhorns" in Yiddish because they were the last to come to America and haven't been Americanized. Other than that she'd go and stay with her grandmother (Bubeh) in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Ruth said, "Bubeh loved me. Bubeh was a warm, funny woman who spoke no English and was full of life." (According to Pg 132) Ruth experienced many things while she was with her grandmother which made her love New York more. She went on her first trolley ride down Bergen Street in Brooklyn. Ruth loved being with her grandmother, she felt as if her grandmother was one of the only people who loved her.
